About gpxlist

gpxlist is an open library of hiking tracks that anyone can search, download and add to.

What we keep, and what we remove

Every file is cleaned before it is published. We keep only the shape of the trail: latitude and longitude, evenly spaced every 10 meters, with elevations from a public terrain model. We remove names, descriptions, notes, waypoints, timestamps, author and copyright fields, links, and device data such as heart rate. The first and last 200 meters of each shared track are cut off, so a track never shows where someone lives. The original file is never stored.

Licenses

Shared tracks are dedicated to the public domain under CC0 1.0. Tracks imported from OpenStreetMap are © OpenStreetMap contributors and available under the Open Database License 1.0. Boundaries come from the US Census Bureau, the US Forest Service and the National Park Service, and are public domain. Elevations come from the Terrain Tiles dataset on the AWS Open Data registry, built from public sources including USGS 3DEP, SRTM, GMTED2010 and ETOPO1. Map tiles by OpenFreeMap, map data © OpenStreetMap contributors. The site's code is MIT licensed.
